BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) are associated with increased morbidity and mortality and excess costs. Ventilator-associated events (VAEs) are HAIs associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation and hospital death. RESEARCH QUESTION: Antibiotic resistance is a major problem for public health, which has accelerated by the overuse of antibiotics worldwide. A national electronic prescribing system(NEPS) was implemented in 2012 as a tool to control excessive antibiotic prescriptions in Greece. The objective of this study was to determine whether the NEPS has led to a reduction in antibiotic prescriptions.
