33rd Annual Meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases (ESPID 2015)
Leipzig, Germany, May 12-16, 2015

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Vaccine hesitancy is increasing worldwide. Widespread dissemination of misinformation may be one important factor but sociopolitical and culture factors may mediate this influence.
This qualitative study evaluates the impact of vaccine-related media coverage on vaccine acceptance among caregivers and immunization providers of young children and adolescents in Greece, an upper income country facing significant economic challenges.

Healthcare-Associated and Surgical Infections Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infections in a Tertiary Referral Pediatric Cancer Center in Russia

V. Pirumova, G. Solopova, J. Kopsidas, K. Mougkou, S. Coffin, Z. Theoklis, G. Novichkova, A. Maschan
33rd Annual Meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases (ESPID 2015)
Leipzig, Germany, May 12-16, 2015

BACKGROUND AND AIMS : Central lines (CLs) are essential for the modern cancer care in children. However, CLs are subject to potentially life-threatening complications, including central line–associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs). There are no data available on the epidemiology of CLABSIs for pediatric hematology/oncology in Russia. The study’s aim was to determine the rate of CLABSIs in the Russia’s largest pediatric cancer center.

Infection Control, Antimicrobial Resistance, Chemoprophylaxis and Antimicrobial Stewardship Prolonged Dual Antibiotic Courses for Culture Positive Neonatal Sepsis in 3 Greek Neonatal Units

I. Kopsidas, L. Lianou, E. Kourkouni, K. Karachristou, E. Stratiki, A. Vintila, D. Karaviti, Z. Kirikas, L. Baglatzi, K. Mougkou, M. Pappa, M. Tsolia, T. Zaoutis, N. Spyridis
33rd Annual Meeting of the European Society for Paediatric Infectious Diseases (ESPID 2015)
Leipzig, Germany, May 12-16, 2015

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major healthcare problem. Antibiotic stewardship programs seek to promote judicious use of antimicrobials. One key element of stewardship interventions is to de-escalate empiric antibiotic therapy following positive culture results.
The aim of this study is to document dual antibiotic therapy in neonates following positive culture results in 3 neonatal units (NNUs) in Greece.

Epidemiology of Neonatal Bacteremia in Greece – Data from a European Surveillance Network

J. Kopsidas, C. Kortsalioudaki, K. Zannikos, K. Karachristou, G. Kοurlaba, F. Anatolitou, N. Lipsou, T. Siachanidou, A. Kent, D. Gkentzi, G. Dimitriou, TE. Zaoutis, PT. Heath, N. Spyridis; on behalf of the Neonatal Infection Surveillance Network (neonIN); Athens and Patras (Greece), London (UK) and Philadelphia (PA, USA)
4th International Congress of Union of European Neonatal and Perinatal Societies (UENPS)
December 11th-14th, 2014, Athens, Greece

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Neonatal sepsis carries significant morbidity and mortality. Data on the epidemiology of bacteremia leading to sepsis in Greece is limited despite knowledge that the prevalence of healthcare-associated infections, antimicrobial consumption and multi-drug resistant organisms is among the highest in Europe. This study aims to describe the epidemiology of bacteremia in Greek neonatal-units (NNUs), patients’ characteristics and antibiotic-resistance profile as recorded in neonIN.

4th International Congress of Union of European Neonatal and Perinatal Societies (UENPS)
December 11th-14th, 2014, Athens, Greece

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Klebsiella spp. are a common cause of hospital-acquired, Gram-negative infections within neonatal units (NNUs) and responsible for outbreaks. This study describes characteristics of invasive Klebsiella spp. infections across European countries participating in a neonatal infection network.
