Intervention Phase

An intensive course "Train the trainers" was scheduled at the end of March, 2017.

The purpose of the course was to educate the champions about the implementation of a package of measures concerning: compliance with appropriate hand hygiene practices and preventing microbial infections associated with a central line. The course was constructive for all participants and enhanced the continuation of productive cooperation.

During this course, the champions were trained on how to implement CLABSI & HH bundles. The training material referred to who to train (doctors, nurses, new staff etc.), structured training (4 topics: HH, insertion, access, dressing change), evaluation/proof of training, list of educated personnel, how to monitor, etc. Indicatively, the new responsibilities of the unit representatives include conducting training courses for all staff in the department, distributing educational material, poster posting, filling out checklists, and maintaining open communication with the CLEO team for any problems or clarifications.

CLEO’s IPs visited all sites and met with hospital administrators, IC committees and clinical leaders to disseminate the baseline phase results and to ensure the approval of and commitment to the interventions planned. Leadership commitment, educational program designing, educational material dissemination, poster hanging, filling of checklists in the routine, audits and feedback by participating units are completed in almost 100%.

The phase of interventions initially for the HH and CLABSI protocols began in early April, 2017 and will last for one year. Interventions for the other protocols (CAUTI, VAE, PAP and Antibiotic Use) will start in the autumn of 2017.
